About the work

“A Cold Spell” depicts one of the subjects that most inspires Wayne Baize: The portrayal of a cowboy’s indispensable partner in perpetuating the culture of Western life.

Wayne Baize (b. 1943) is no stranger to cowboy life, having grown up just a few miles from the famous Swenson SMS Ranch near Stamford, Texas. On the family stock farm, he learned the value of a good horse and helped break colts as a youth. He also found tremendous pleasure in creating images that showcase the world of the contemporary cowboy and his animals.

As his artistic abilities developed, Wayne realized he could make a living depicting his favorite subject matter, and his dream of being a full-time artist materialized into reality. Honors and awards followed, culminating in 1995 when he was invited to become a member of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America (CAA). Being a CAA member is the fulfillment of a dream, but it also serves as a challenge to become a better artist.

Wayne progressed from CAA member to helping lead the organization as  a Director, Vice President, and eventually President. His achievements include a Silver Medal in Drawing, the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association Aware for the Best Portrayal of a cowboy subject, and a Gold Medal in Mixed Media at the CA’s annual show. His art has been featured in major magazines like Western Horseman, The Cattleman, Quarter Horse Journal, The Hereford Journal, and Texas Monthly.

Wayne lives in West Texas on a small ranch where he and his family run a small herd of registered Hereford cattle. He continues his focus and passion to carry out the CAA mission to “authentically preserve and perpetuate the culture of Western life in fine art.”
