About the work

The scene depicted in this work was painted two years after Hans Meyer-Kassel arrived in Nevada in 1936, at a time when he and his wife Maria where living in Reno. Exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art exhibition “Hans Meyer-Kassel: Artist of Nevada,” 2018. Housed in a handcrafted oak frame by Holton Studio Frame-Makers of Berkeley, California.

From the family of Henry Phipps, New York, by direct family descent until acquired by Nevada Fine Art. Phipps was an American Entrepreneur known for his business relationship with Andrew Carnegie and his involvement with the Carnegie Steel Company. The painting was acquired by one of Phipps’ descendants, possibly his grandson Alastair B. Martin. Alastair Martin and his wife Edith Park Martin were widely known as fine art collectors and were once listed among the country’s top 100 collectors by Art & Antiques magazine.

About the artist…

Hans Meyer-Kassel (1872-1952) spent the final fifteen years of his life in northern Nevada, having journeyed from his native Germany in the early 1930s to become guest artist and lecturer at Amherst College in Massachusetts. An invitation to exhibit in Pasadena, California, led the artist to seek a new home in the American West, and he quickly resettled in Reno. Later he moved to Carson City before eventually finding a home in Genoa.
